K-033 Qamishli, Syria

 1 Navê mi ****, ez ji K’urdistana Sûrîyê me.
My name is ****, I am from the Syrian part of Kurdistan.
 2 Ez hatimi dinyê sala hezar û nehsed û heştê w yekê, li bajarê ʕamûdê.
I was born in 1981, in the town of Amûdê.
 3 Wê ç’aẋê bavê mi l ʕamûdê dişiẋulî, miḥamî/ k’atib ʕedil bû li wêdekê.
Back then my father was working in Amûdê, he was a lawyer/ a legal clerk there.
 4 Dûrakê, p’iştî wêna ez pênc salî bûm em/ em ji Qamişlo ç’ûn / em ji ʕamûdê ç’ûn Qamişlo.
Later on, when I was five years old, we went from Qamishlo/ we went from Amûdê to Qamishlo.
 5 Li wêdekê mi dest medresê kir, medresa Meṣaṛif, nêzîkî mala mi bû, yanî cadaak dûrî/ medrese li wî alî cadê bû mala me li vî alî cadê bû.
I started studying there, and the Mesarif school, it was near my house, that is one street away from/ the school was on the other side of the street, our house was on this side of the street.
 6 Mi şeş sala li medresa Meṣaṛif xwend, gelek istazê baş li medresê hebûn, ê go ez wana ji bîra nakim, wek istaz ****, wek istaz ****.
I studied at the Mesarif school for five years, there were very good teachers at the school, whom I haven’t forgetten, like the teacher **** and the teacher ****.
 7 Dûrakê, li ʕemrê ḥeft salî/ li ʕemrê sêzde salî ez bûm ṣefa hefta, ez ç’ûm medresa Ḥemdanîyê.
Later, when I was seven years old/ when I was thirteen years old, in the seventh grade, I went to the Hemdaniye school.
 8 Ḥebkî dûrî mala me bû, ez/ ez divê ez ribek siʕetê ḥeya bîst deqa ez bimeşîyama ḥeya ez bigihama wê medresê.
It was quite far from our house, I had to walk fifteen to twenty minutes to get to school.
 9 Ḥeya ana tê bîra mi roja ewîl wê medresê ez nexweş k’etim.
Even today I remember how on the first day of school I fell ill.
 10 Cewê mi hat guhertin, merḥala nuh hebû.
The circumstances had changed, it was a new era.
 11 Divê me çekê ʕeskerî li xwe kirana, bi îʕtîbar wê fetrê li Sûrî merḥala eʔdadî û θanewî me çekê ʕeskerî li xwe dikirin li medresa.
We had to wear military clothing, during that period in Syria, at the preparatory and secondary levels, we wore military clothing.
 12 Ḥisê me ji sibê ḥeya êvarî diman yanî pênc siʕet bûn şeş siʕet bûn, lê tiştê gu ji bîra mi nari di wê fetrê de em înê-jî, înê yanî ʕeṭła me bû, ʕeṭła weḥîd bû ji me ri, em dibirin yom ʕeskerî.
We would have classes until the evening, for five or six hours, but what I cannot forget is during that time, even on Friday, which was our day off, our only day off, they would take us to the military service day.
 13 Yom ʕeskerî ç’i bû?
What was the military service day?
 14 Muderrib hebû, muderrib bêji muderribê futûwê wê fetrê.
There was a trainer, that is, the trainer for military subjects during that time.
 15 Muderribê futûwê ç’i dikir ji me re? Em dicemiʕandin û em dimerinandin el ʕesas, yanî li cem wana digo, digo “ji vê merḥilê divê hûn/ ûn/ ûn zanibin miletê me di ḥerbê deyi dijî/ dijî dijmina” ew tişt miştê wulo yenî.
What did the military trainer do with us? He would gather us and he would train us, he even said to us, he said, “at this stage, you should know that our people are at war with the enemies”, and things like that.
 16 Ê go k’es yeqîn nedikir, bes wulo bû, waqi’ wulo bû.
Things that nobody believed, but it was like that, the truth was like that.
 17 P’iştî ṣefa neha, mi/ mi nexwend.
After the ninth grade I did not study.
 18 P’iştî ṣefa neha ez sekinîm, salkê di sala sekinîm, di wê fetrê de mi a/ e l malê mi alî birê xwe dikir, mi, mi nexwend.
After the ninth grade I stopped, for one or two years I stopped; during that time I helped my brother at home.
 19 Dûrakê, xuha mi, a ḥuqûq dixwend li camiʕa Ḥelebê, wêna ez qane kiribûm ez vegerim xwendinê, û qîmetê/ qîmetê insan di xwendina wîna deye.
Later on, my sister, who was studying law at the university of Aleppo, she convinced me to return to studying, that the value of a man is in his studies.
 20 **** gelekî gelekî di vê fetrê de ç’îka mi kir, mi/ mi-b/ mi-b xêra wêna mi/ ez vegerîyam cewê xwendinê, b-xêra wêna ez anka dixwînim.
**** at that time did a lot for me, thanks to her I returned to my studies, thanks to her I am now studying.
 21 Dûrakê, mi, mi bekelorya qedimand, sala êkê, mi ḥur qedimand û ez hatim edeb înglîzî camiʕa/ camiʕa Ḥelebê mi xwend.
Later on, I started my Bachelor’s degree, in the first year I took the free exam, and I studied English literature, I studied at the university of Aleppo.
 22 Ez sê sala li camiʕa Ḥelebê mam, li wêdekê mi dest bi zimane îngilîzî kir.
I stayed at the university of Aleppo for three years, there I studied English language.
 23 Mi dûrakê, mi gelek heval li wir dîtin.
Later on, I made many friends there.
 24 Mi, dûrakê, ez ç’ûm camiʕa Şamê, li sala sisîya bûm ez ç’ûm camiʕa Şamê.
Later on I went to the university of Damascus, it was in the third year that I went to the university of Damascus.
 25 Li wir, mi, mi-jî go ez muʕedilê xwe biebitînim yenî li Ḥelebê ḥebkî/ ḥebkî nîzam girantir bû ji Şamê.
There, I said I’d improve my average, because in Aleppo the system was a bit harder than in Damascus.
 26 Ez wêdekê mi girantî didît ji bo ez muʕeddil bînim, lê li Şamê ḥebkî ç’êtir bû mi muʕeddil anî.
There I was having difficulties improving my average, but in Damascus it was a bit better, I improved my average.
 27 Dûrakê mi/ ez ç’ûm Laziqîyê-jî, mi, mi fetrakê li wir mam, mi, mi derisand li camiʕa/ li camiʕa Tişrîn.
Later on, I also went to Latakia, I stayed there for some time, I taught at the university of Tishreen.
 28 Mi zimanê înglîzî diderisand ji/ ji xelkê go ji/ ne îxtîsas re, yenî wek ji k’îmya re, mi derisand k’îmya sala ç’ara, û mi derisand k’ullîya rîyaḍa sala didûwa.                
I taught English language to people who did not specialize in it, like chemistry, I taught chemistry in the fourth year, and I taught at the mathematics department during the second year.
