K-024 Tatvan, Turkey

1 Dema ez zeḥf piçük bîm, dema ez zarok bîm, dîya mi baxçe tidanî, êca mi-jî zeḥf jê ḥez tikir, mi zeḥf tivîya ez biç’im baxçê, nav baxçê bigerim.
When I was very young, when I was a child, my mother had a vegetable garden, well I liked it very much, I liked very much going into the garden and roaming around in it.
2 Dema t’aze bihar tihat bavê mi diç’û baxçe dikola, mi-jî carinan arîyê tikir.
In the early spring, my father would go to dig the garden, and I would also sometimes help him.
3 Mi netikarîya ez k’ürekê rakem lê min/ mi arîyê tikir.
I was not able to handle the shovel but I helped him.
4 Tu beḥsa Tetwanê dikî ne niha?
You are talking about Tatvan, right?
5 Erê erê ez beḥsa Tetwanê tikim.
Yes, yes I am talking about Tatvan.
6 Wexta kû ew k’olan xilas tibî êca min û dîya xwe em tiç’ûn me sebzeyan didanî.
When this digging was over, this time me and my mother we would go and plant the vegetables.
7 Dîya mi digirte adekê, tiket nav baxç’ê, bi adekê ʕerdê k’ür tikir û ji mi ra digot “pênc ḥeb baqle dane nav wan.”
My mother would grab a hoe, go into the garden, would dig the earth deep and tell me, “put five beans in them”.
8 Mi pênc ḥeb baqle datinî, mi ḥemî-jî tihejmart.
I would put in five beans, I would count all of them.
9 Piştî baqle xilas tibîn ji mi ra digot nav t’asikekê da bacik dianîn, digo “van bacika dane,” te dî bacik piçük in, digo “ḥeşt ḥeb danê.”
After the seeds were gone, she would tell me, she would bring peppers on a plate, and tell me, “put these peppers in”, you know peppers are small, she would say, “put in eight of them.”
10 Mi-jî ḥemî tihejmart, mi ḥeşt ḥeb bacik dixist nav ḥemî ʕerdan. P’aşê dîya mi tiç’û avdanê.
I would count all of them, I would put eight peppers into all the places. Than my mother would go and do the watering.
11 Êvaran em bi łembê tiç’in, ṭarrî bî zeḥf ṭarrî bî, înca ez-jî zeḥf ṭirsonek im, ez-jî titirsîyam.
In the evenings we would go out with a lamp, since it was dark, very dark, and I am a very timid person, I would get scared.
12 Mi łembê digirt, dîya mi berîya mi tiç’û, em diç’ûn digihaştinê, p’aşê dîya min av degîş tikir. ḥeta dîya min avê degîş tikir ziravê mi dit’eqîya.
I would hold the lamp, my mother would go in front of me, we would get there, then my mother would change the water. Until my mother changed the water, I was scared.
13 Baş e ava we ji kehnîyê dihat yan normal av bû?
Well, did the water come from the fountain/source or was it normal water?
 14 Ne ne, ji/ şi xort’ûmê tihat.
No, no, it came from the hose.
 15 E, me xort’ûm dibir degîş tikir.
Yes, we would take the hose and change it.
16 Înca esker-jî, eskerîye-jî zeḥf nêzîkê me bî, ez şevan ji wan ditirsîyam.
Then the soldiers, the military base was very close to us, I was afraid of them in the evenings.
17 Carinan mermî tavêtin, dengê wan tihat ez zeḥf titirsîyam.
Sometimes they would fire guns, we would hear their noise, I was scared.
18 Şevekê dîsa em ç’ûn em-ê t’am biç’ûna tê me avê degîş kira, ez dîya xwe bîm em dîsa, em t’am tiç’ûn, deng hat, dengê mermîyê hat, mermî t’am ji ber serê min derbas bî.
One night, again, we went, we were about to go to change the water, me and my mother again, we were just about to go, a sound came, the sound of a bullet, it passed right by my head.
19 Înca ez wusa sek’inîm, wusa tirsam, dîya mi hindik mabî bimirîya ji tirsan.
Then I just stopped, I was so scared, my mother was about to die of fear.
20 Go “ew mermî t’am ji ser serê te derbas bî.”
She said, “that bullet passed right above your head.”
21 Înca piştî wî ez zeḥf titirsim êvaran derk’evim derve, yan dengek bê ez hema ji nişka ve disek’inim.
Since then I was really afraid of going out in the evenings, or if there was a sound I’d stop all of a sudden.
22 Ji eynî wan sebzeyan, fîkî-jî hebîn.
Apart from those vegetables, there was also fruit.
23 Babê mi-jî ji fîkîyan zeḥf ḥez tikir.
My father, he liked fruit very much.
24 Înca dîya mi bavê mi her dem qirên tikirin, ji ber sîya fîkîyan sebze ç’ênedibîn.
So my mother and my father often argued, because in the shade of the fruit trees the vegetables would not grow.
25 Babê mi tiç’û k’arçên didanî, sêv didanî, gilas didanî, fişne hebîn, ç’i zanim ç’i didît dianî.
My father would plant pears, apples, cherries, sour cherries, I don’t know, he would bring whatever he saw.
 26 Rojekê k’estane anî.
One day, he brought a chestnut.
27 Me ç’iqas gotê “k’estane ç’ênabi liha Tetwane liha ne qeredenize,” go “ne ez-ê danim, tê ç’êbe.”
No matter how much we told him, “a chestnut will not grow, here is Tatvan not the Black Sea region,” he said, “No, I will plant it, it will grow.”
 28 Ê wiła ç’û k’estanê danî. Em ç’en sał hîvîyê man.
Well, he planted the chestnut. We waited for it for a few years.
29 Piştê sê ç’ar sałan me t’emaşê kir k’estane girtîye.
After three or four years, we looked and saw that the chestnut had grown.
 30 Înca ç’i k’estanê mezin bîn ç’i k’estanê xweş bîn.
But what big chestnuts, what delicious chestnuts they were!
31 Me wan k’estanan tianîya, datanîya se sûbê, me ji xwe re ç’êtikir me tixwar.
We would bring those chestnuts, put them in the oven, we would make them for ourselves and we would eat.
 32 Înca ç’îroka min-a baxçê ev e.
Well this is my story with the garden.
33 Wiła li gorî dapîra mi dibêje em ji Cizîrê hatine.
So according to what my grandmother says we came from Cizre.
34 Bapîrê mi zêde nayê bîrê, zêde van tiştan nizane.
My grandfather does not remember much, he does not know much of these things.
35 Dapîra mi dibêje em ji Cizîrê hatine, ç’üne Hîzanê, jixwe li hîzanê, jîyana xwe li Hîzanê dewam kirine.
My grandmother says we came from Cizre, went to Hizan, lived in Hizan.
36 P’aşê, sała kû ez hatime dinyayê, ḥeştê ḥeştan da hatine Tetwanê.
Later, the year I was born, in eighty-eight they came to Tatvan.
37 Li Tetwanê k’ar marekî babê mi t’inebîye.
In Tatvan my father did not have any real job.
 28 Bîye ceyrancî.
He became an electrician.
 29 Çüye dik’anekî ceyranê vekiriye. Tiştey/ tiç’û înşaatan, ceyrana wan ç’êdikir, qabloyê wan tik’êşa.
He opened an electrician’s shop. He would go to the construction sites, make their electricity, set their cords.
30 Îcar birê mi-jî ḥemî bi wî ra tixebitîn.
My brothers all worked with him.
 31 Ḥemî tiç’ûne dik’anê.
They all would go to the shop.
32 P’aşî mezin bîn, birê mi wan. Her yek ç’û ji xwe ra xwand. Û em/ em pênc bira û ç’ar xwa ne.
Then they grew up, my brothers and others. Each of them studied. We are five brothers and sisters.
 33 Ḥemî-jî ç’ûn xwandin û gehane mirazê xwe.
All of them studied and reached their goals.
