K-059 Kulp, Turkey

1 *** bira, niha jî em xwe piçek sohbet bikin. Bahsê te-w zarokatî-w malbatê.
Brother ***, now we will have a chat. About you and your childhood and family.
 2 Wele navê gundê me/
By God the name of our village,
 3 Tu ji ku derê-y?
Where are you from?
4 Ez Qulpî me, Tirkî dibên Qulpê yanî, kurmancî navê wî Pasûr e yanî.
I am from Qulp, in Turkish it is called Qulp, in Kurmanji its name is Pasûr.
 5 Pasûr.
6 Pasûr jî dibêjin yanî “pala sor”. Ku tu pala sor bî, yanî wisa kinikî bî. Bî Pala/ bî Pasûr.
Pasûr, they say, means “pala sor”, that is it was “pala sor”, and it was shortened, it became Pasûr.
7 Pasûr yanî cîkî sa bilind e, yanî mîna pir ji gundê çawa bêjim, sa qeza, dora/ mîna qezê dorê xwe nîne.
Pasûr is an elevated place, that is, how shall I say, it is not like the districts surrounding it.
8 Mesela, Silîva, mesela pir di/ rast e, ewka wê heye, ema aliyê Pasûrê sa rastî hindik e. Ciyê bilind e.
For instance, Silivia is very flat, but in the direction of Pasûr there is little flat area. It is an elevated place.
 9 Çiya ye?
Is it mountainous?
10 Çiya ye, tev çiya ne, tevî çiya ye sa boy wî yanî pir ewk e yanî. Wisa ewka wê nîne, xweș nîne, hanî tu nikarî sa zû sa xweș ji xwe bigerî.
It is mountainous, all mountains, all mountains, so for that reason it is very much like/ It does not have like/ it is not pleasant, that is you can’t walk around for pleasure.
11 Înca navê gundê me jî Kanika ye.
Our village is called Kanika.
 12 Kanika,
Kanika
 13 Kanika ye
Kanika
14 Çima jê re dibên Kanika?
Why do they call it Kanika?
15 Wele e-jî nizam çima dibêjin, ema wisa me ra hatiye dibên Kanika, nav gotine.
Well, I don’t know either why they call it that, but it has been passed on to us, they say Kanika, they called it so.
16 Kanika jî ser ʕeșîreta Badika ye, belkî te seh kiribû. Badika yanî ew jî ser wê ye, ser Kanika.
Kanika belongs to the Badika tribe, maybe you have heard of it. Badika, it belongs to that, to Kanika.
17 Kanika wisa cîkî, wisa, ew jî mîna Qulpê bilind e, mesela wisa bêkeys e.
Kanika is a place, just like Qulp it is high up, that is, it is so uncomfortable.
It is all woodland, it doesn’t have a lot of soil so you could plant anything, there is very little soil. So for that reason people there often do not plant/ they can’t plant wheat and such things.
19 Boy wî yanî milet pirî eywan xweyî dike.
For that reason, people mostly raise animals.
 20 eywan xweyî dike.
They raise animals.
 21 eywan xweyî dike.
They raise animals.
22 Kîjan, piranî kîjan eywana xweyî dikin?
Which ones, which animals do they mostly raise?
23 Wele, milet yaʕnî boy wî ku bilind e, mêșina {nikanî} xweyî kî, dewar jî, sa dewar jî tu {nika} xweyî ki. Pirê wî ḥeywanê reș, pez, yanî, em dibên pez, yanî ew wisa xweș dikarî tê herî werî boy wî, yanî pir pez xweyî dikin.
Well, since it is so high, they cannot raise sheep, nor cattle, you can’t breed cattle either. It is mostly black sheep, I say sheep, that is, they can easily graze, for that reason, that is, they usually raise sheep.
24 Boy wê mesela dora me da teva gunda yanî pirî pez in, dewar jî xweyî dikin, dewarî wî jî mîna dewarê ewk nînin. Wisa wan dewarê gir nînin. Tu/ mesela car dibên “sîmenta” car dibên “Hołanda”. Ew dewar nikarin wan deran bimînin.
For that reason, that is, in all the villages around us they mostly raise sheep, they also raise cattle, but the cattle are not like cattle. They are not so sturdy cattle. Sometimes they call them “Simenta” sometimes “Dutch”. That is, those cattle cannot stay in those places.
25 Em jê re dibêjin dewarê qereçî.
We call them Gypsy cattle
 26 Dewarê qereçî.
Gypsy cattle
27 Dewarê qereçî, wisa dewar wisa hûr in, pir gir nînin, ema wisa ku bilind e ya wan dera, deʕl e, gurr e, ewk e kevir in, zinar in tev, yanî boy wî dewar yanî ew dewar xweș derdikevin, diçin tên. Wisa zeʕîf in, ewk in, çûçik in xweș dikanin herin werin, wisa jêhatî ne dewar.
Gypsy cattle, are these small cattle. They are not very sturdy, but since those areas are so high up, with dense woods, stones, cliffs all around, that is why the cattle, those cattle graze easily, they come and go. They are so thin, they are like this, small that they can graze, they are very capable, those cattle.
28 Yanî pir gundî dewar, pez xweyî dikin, pezê reș xweyî dikin. Hanî, hanî boy wî, mesela goștê pezê wî, dewarê wî wisa xweș e. Wisa dewar xweș diçi tê, çi tên. {Na wisa} wan çiya ku digerin ewk dibê, yanî pir ewk nîne, pir yaẋlî jî nîne nava goștê wî, wisa goștê wî xweș e.
So, many villagers raise cattle, they raise sheep, black sheep, so for that reason, the meat from the sheep and cattle is very good. The cattle come and go quickly. They go around on those mountains, it becomes like, that is it is not very like, it is not very fatty inside its meat, its meat is delicious.
 29 Wele gundê me/
Really our village/
30 Tu li gund mezin bûyî? Zarokatiya te li gund/
Did you grow up in the village? Your childhood in the village/
31 Wele zaruya mi-l gund, çend sala li gund mam, heta doksan üçê wan, yanî not û sisiya wan, yanî bin dokuz yüz doksan üçê wan. Heta wê demê li gund mam, pey re ku gundê me hat șewitandin/
Well, my childhood in the village, I stayed in the village for a few years, until ’93 or so, that is until ‘93 or so, that is until 1993 or so. Until then I stayed in the village, later on when our village was burnt/
32 Ha gundê we jî hat șewitandin?
Oh your village was burnt?
33 Tabî gundê me jî hat șewitandin, gundê me jî, çiyayê me jî, her du jî hatin șewitandin, ija milet tev rabûn, li gund yek nema.
Of course, our village was also burnt, our village, our mountains, both were burnt, then the people all left, nobody stayed in the village.
34 Hînik çûn, mesele hînik gundiyê me çûn gundkî dinê, mesele gundkî deha nêz, wisa deha ewk dûr be, cîkî sakîn. Meselen em jî çûn wê derê, hem çûn wê derê, hem jî çûn Qulpê, Pasûrê.
Some went, that is, some of our villagers went to another village, that is a closer village, just a bit further, a calm place. For instance, we too we went there, we both went there and went to Qulp, to Pasûr.
35 Malik me li gund bû, malik me jî me Pasûrê çêkir ew kir. Yanî wisa me go em gund ewkê xwe neqetînin.
We had one house in the village, and a house we built in Pasûr. In this way we didn’t completely abandon the village.
36 Ewka me, sif hanî çawa bêm, mesele gêçima xwe bi ḥeywan ewk dikin, hanî boy wî Pasûrê tu nikarî ḥeywan xweyî bikî.
Our thing, how should I say, for instance, our livelihood is animals, and you cannot breed animals in Pasûr.
 37 Rast e.
Right.
38 Boy wî gerek gund bimînî.
That’s why you have to stay in the village.
39 Em jî çûn gundê diya min, me jî mala xwe bir gundê diya min. Em wê derê man usa heta ḥeft, heșt sala.
So we went to my mother’s village, we moved our household to my mother’s village. We stayed there like that for seven, eight years.
40 Pey ra olayek wêdê çêbû, wesa gundî hevdî hevdû ketin, gundiyê wê derê û gundiyê me. Ew jî hevdû qetiyan, usa neh deh sala em dîsa hatin gundê xwe, usa çî sakîn bû.
Later on an incident occurred there, both groups of villagers had a conflict, the villagers form there and our villagers. They were separated from each other, we returned to our village, and things calmed down.
41 Hûn carek dî vegeriyan gundê xwe-y berê ne wisa?
So you went back to your previous village?
42 Em hane/ vegeriyan gundê xwe-y berê, gerçî ana jî wisa pir ewk nebû, wisa gêçim qeynaẋî ewk bû. Wisa olay molay çê bûn, wisa em nika sa pir biman, me dîsan mala xwe anî Qulpê/ anî Pasûrê.
So we returned to our previous village, it wasn’t really anymore, there was no livelihood anymore. Such incidents and things occurred, such that we were not able to […] stay, so again we moved to Qulp/ to Pasûr.
43 Me go heta piçikî sakîn bî, mesela sirf boy wî mesela par yanî wisa olayk ewk çêbû meselen em boy wî em îsal nikanin biçûna çem. Mesele ku hevdû ketin wisa esker û ewk, hanî ku hevdû ketin em navê de çûn.
We said until it calms down a bit, for instance only for that reason, for instance last year an incident occurred, something happened, like for that reason we were not able to go to the river this year. Like when the two clashed, like the soldiers and the others, the two clashed and we were caught in the middle.
44 Em jî mecbûren me jî mala xwe na sa ne, me sa ne disa me mala xwe anî Pasûrê, heta ku piçkî sakîn bî em dîsa fetlin.
And we were obliged to move our house back to Pasûr, till it was a bit calm and we return again.
45 Ema wisa sif bîra me tê yanî gund, tu car me bîra nekiriye. Em-ê dîsa em-ê herin, mesela diya min bêje e nikarim vê îdare kim.
But we only remember the village, that is we have not forgotten it. We will go back there, my mother says “I cannot go on here.”
46 Çêbî kî dîsa em herin gund,
It is possible that we go to village again,
47 dîsa herin gund ema bavê min jî pir wisa ew nîne. Dibêje yanî heta ku van olaya hebin çawa em-ê herin gund? Gerek çîçkî van olaya bisekinin, ewk bû pey re em-ê dîsa em-ê herin gundê xwe. Yanî, heta ku ewk nebê, çîkî sakîn nebê em nikarin herin gundê xwe.
we went back to the village, but my father is not like that. He says as long as these clashes are going on, how can we go to the village? These clashes should stop, then we will go back to our village. Until this happens, when it is calm, we cannot go to our village.
48 Wele mi jî mekteba xwu ewkê xwend, Qulpê xwend, Pasûrê xwend. Wele navê mekteva me-y pêșîn Ataturk bû. Atatürk Ilk öğretim oqulu bû. Ḥeta pêncê wê derê xwend, pey re mekteba me ewk bû xera kirin. Yanî şûna wî de mektebek tezê çêkirin, îca em çûn mektevek dinê.
Well, I went to school there, in Qulp, in Pasûr. Well, the name of our first school was Atatürk. Atatürk ilk örğretim okulu. Until fifth grade I studied there, later on our school was destroyed. In its place a new school was built, we went to another school.
49 Mesela mi Orteoqula xwe Vali Nafis hebû Kayali İlköğretim Okulu heye. Meselen mi wê derê xwende. Pey re mi lîsê jî sa ewkê xwend […] Qulp Lîsesî, navê wê Qulp Lîsesî bû, ewkê xwend, dîsa Qulpê xwende.
For instance, my secondary school, there was Valinakil Kayaliköy İlkörğretim Okulu. I studied there. Later on, high school too, I studied in, Kulp high school, its name was Kulp Lisesi, I studied there, again in Qulp.
50 Pey re ku e mezin bûm, salkê me go em herin Diyarbekir ewkê, wisan dershane me girt. Bowê mi dershane girt. Salkî Diyarbekir mam, mi ew kir xebityam wê derê.
Then when I was grown up, one year we said we should go to Diyarbekir, we took the preparatory school. My father took the preparatory school. I stayed in Diyarbekir for one year, I worked there.
51 Mesa xewityam pey ra, mi ewk kir, pê xebata min jixwu ewk bû, sinaw ewk, açixlamîș bû, sinaw açixlamîș bû mi jî hanî puankî wisa xerab nebû mi stendibû. Pey wî mi tercîh kir, mesela min Dîcle universitesi, ewk xwende Türkçe öğretmenî
That is I worked, then I did, I achieved, the exam, it was announced, the exam was announced and I my grades weren’t bad. Then I made my choices, that is, at the University of Dicle, I studied to be a Turkish teacher,
52 yanî meʕelimtî tirkî, min xwende, anha ez Türkçe öğretmenî me. Em jî memûr in.
that is to be a teacher of Turkish I studied, now I am a teacher ofTurkish. We are state officers.
53 Pey re çaxa ewkê xwendim, yanî min çaxa mektebê xwende, li unîversiteyê mi Türkçe öğretmenî mi xwende, sala sisiya wan bû ketim sinavê, ketim/ orta öğretim KPSS sinavî, ketimê kî wisa vir hate, yanî îsal sê sal e e-yî virim.
Then when I was studying, that is when I was studying at university, when I was studying to become a Turkish teacher, in the third year I took the secondary school KPSS exam. So I was assigned to here, this is the third year that I have been here.
 54 Sê sal e.
Three years.
55 Sê sal e yê vir im, vir dișiẋulim, vir memûrtî dikim.
I have been working here for three years, I work as a civil servant.
 56 Tu zewiciyî?
Are you married?
 57 Hi?
Huh?
 58 Tu zewiciyî?
Are you married?
59 Na, wele ez ʕezeb im, hê ʕezeb im, hê nezewiciya me.
No, actually I am single, I am still single, I am still not married.
60 Ama naxwazim vir bimînim. Mesela Mardîn, wisa gora mi nîne, mesela aliyê me sa çawa bêjim, aha mesela hêșînî bol e, av bol e.
But I do not want to stay here. Mardin is not suitable for me, that is in our region, how shall I say, there is a lot of green, water.
61 Mesele çemê me heye, du sê hev çemê me hene, mesele çemê Qulpê, çemê ewkê, mese wê derê tu hînî wê derê bî, e nikam vir îdare bikim, vira mesele zor e wela.
That is we have rivers, we have two or three rivers, for instance the Qulp river, the other river, that is if you are used to living there, I cannot live here, it is difficult here.
62 Tu ji gund jî pir ḥez dikî?
Do you also like the village a lot?
63 Erê gund jî pir ḥez dikim.
I also like the village a lot.
