K-058 Bismil, Turkey

1 ***** bira niha-jî em-ê soḥbetekê bi hev re bikin. Tu piçek beḥsa xwe bikî, malbata xwe an gundê xwe. An mesele çîrokek bikenî bît, êdî çi bête bîra xwe, piçekî wiha ji mi ra biaxivî, beḥsa xwe bikî?
Brother *****, now we are going to have a chat together. Would you talk a bit about yourself, your family, and your village. Or if there are some funny stories, anything that comes to your mind that you can tell me about yourself?
2 Gundê me-l Bismil e, gundê me em tenê ne, ê ẋerîb tê tine. Mała tenê ẋerîb e. Gundê me ava Dî/ nehra Dîclê ber-re diçe.
Our village is Bismil, it’s only us who live in our village, there are no strangers. Only the imam is a stranger. The Tigris river runs through our village.
3 Gundê me biçûçik e, sakîn e. Zaroktiya me baș çû.
Our village is small, calm. I spent my childhood well.
4 Mekteb li gundê me hebû, dawiyê hate girtin em bi mektebê, em ji ber wê çar sala çûn ber dewara.
We had a school in our village, but it shut down in the end. Because of this, we looked after cows for four years.
5 Piștî wê dawiyê gundek li dora, ji gundê me dûr bû, em çûn wî gundî me mekteb dewam kir.
After that, finally, we went to a village that was far from our village and continued to attend school.
6 Ji pey wê mektebê jî ewk bû, me xwend. Dawiyê em sê çar sala ketin sinavê, me çû Diyarbekir lîse xwend.
After that school we studied. In the end, we took exams for two to three years. We went to Diyarbekir to study at high school.
7 Ba birê xwe-y öretmen me xwend û ji ber wê ez ketim sinavê mi kir nekir dört yil/ yilliẋ nehat.
I went to my brother’s, who was a teacher. For that reason I took the exam [i.e. university entrance exam], but I couldn’t get the (grades for) four-year study, though I tried my best.
8 Em çûn, mi salekê ez neçûm dersxanê, çûm li gund mam pembo av da, e li wir ketim sinavê û e li wir min Ercîș qezenc kir, Vanê banqaciliq. Em ji xwe re bûn, ketin qapesê.
However, for one year, I didn’t go to the preparatory class, I went to the village where I watered cotton. There, I took an exam and got a place studying banking in Erciș. Then, I took the KPSS [i.e. the exam for becoming a state officer] exam.
9 Piștî ku em ketin qapesê me qezenc kir, em ji xwe re hatin Mêrdînê, li za/ li unîversta wê em bûn memûr. Va șeș ḥeft sal e, em ji xwe re li vir dișiẋulin.
After I got the KPSS, I came to Mardin, where I became an employee at its university. I have been working here for six to seven years.
10 O gundê me jî em ça/ em ḥeșt bira ne, sê xușkê me hene, bavê mi çû reḥmetê.
And in our village, we are eight brothers, we have three sisters, my father passed away.
 11 Serê we sax be.
Condolences.
12 Saxtir, Xwedê ji te razî be. O gotinê bavê mi gelekî baș hebûn. Carekê digote-kî, ez ewk bûm, ez wextê bavê wî sureklî jê re gotîye, gotîye lawo, yaw ev bênamûsî tișkî pirr nexweș e.
God bless you. My father used to say many good things. Once he said that his own father would always tell him, my son, how bad shamelessness is!
13 Lê ku li însana rûdinê dibe weke șekir, kî çi dibêje zora meriv naçe, çunkî carkê li meriva rûniștiye.
But if it becomes a feature of a person, it becomes as sweet as sugar for that person and no matter what anyone says he is never ashamed, because now it has become a part of him.
14 Gundê me jî pîrekeka piçû/ yașlî hebû. Xalê min-î doxtor çiqa bihata wê nobeta wî bigirtana. Diçû, ʕemrê wê not bû, pirr ji mirinê ditirsiya.
There was an old woman in our village. She was always waiting for my uncle, the doctor, when he used to come to the village. She was ninety years old, she was so scared of death.
15 Kî digo mirinê, kî mirin, go beḥsa mirinê bikira bigota hê tu saẋ î, xeber bi wa dikir digo, “hema hûn têkevin binê erdê”.
Whoever said ‘death’ and talked about death or teased her by saying: “are you still alive”? She was cursing and saying “let all of you be buried.”
16 Îja rokê xalê mi hat, ʕemrê wê not bû, navê xalê min baḥs dikir, xalê min-î doxtor digot “eee ka li qelbê mi binêre, ev qelbê min dișiẋule?”
One day, my uncle came, she was ninety years old, my uncle, the one who is a doctor, and she asked: “can you check if my heart works?”
17 Êê digo, “Xwedê ji te razî ma qelbê te neșiẋule ji xwe tê bimrî, ma îja însanê qelbê wî neșiẋule, ka îsan yanî”. Êê digo, “va meriv dibê qey va rowa nașiẋule!”
He would say, “God bless you, if your heart is not working, you would die. Are there human beings who have their hearts not working?” She was saying: “I think that it hasn’t worked for these past few days!”
18 Wele îșê me wisa derbas dibe, e-b çifçîliẋê-r uẋrașmîș dibin.
Well, this is our situation, we work in farming.
 19 Malbata te, bi çifçîliẋe-r…
Your family works in farming?
20 Malbata mi bi çifçîliẋê re uẋrașmîș dibe. Sê birayê me jî yek öretmen e, yek jî memûr e, e-jî memûr im em sê ḥeb dewletê de dișiẋulin.
My family works in farming. I have three brothers, one is a teacher, one is a state officer and I am a state officer too. We, all three brothers, work for the government.
21 Ji bo ewkê xebatê dikin îște, dewletê re xebatê dikin, ji zaningehê re. Yek öretmen e, yek memûr e, li Îdilê ye. Ê-dinê jî-l Diyarbekir e. Em jî va-l Mêrdînê ji xwe re dișiẋulin.
For that, we serve the state, for the university. One is a teacher, one is a state officer in Idil. The other one is in Diyarbakir. And I am working in Mardin.
22 Ka Memed tu piçe beaḥsê ewê bikî? Dema tu zarok bûy te go, çend sala e-çûme ber dewara, te șivantî, gavantî kiriye?
Can you tell me about something? You said, when you were a boy, you looked after cows for several years, did you do sheep grazing, cow grazing?
23 Erê, meslekê pêxembera ye, wisa dibêjin. Dibê ê ku bibe șivan gelekî dibe yonetîcîkî baș.
Yes, they say that it is prophets’ profession. If one becomes a shepherd, he would become a good administrator.
24 Îșała, em wa roja jî bibînin!
You will see that day too, God willing.
 25 Îșała, qismet!
God willing, if it is my destiny!
26 Yanî, derbarê wa sala de, mesele çi ani, çi serpêhatî …
I mean, about those years, any stories and adventures …
27 Ê wela anîkî carekê xweș heye. E-j te-ra bêjim, rokê em û hevalekî em li ber dewara bûn, yanî ewê anî, vêna ez hîç ji bîr nakim, em çûn kûçkekî gundekî qarșa me, pirr meșûr bû. Jê re digo kûçikê șîn.
Actually, there is a very interesting adventure, I will tell you about it. One day, me and a friend of mine were grazing the cows, this is one that I won’t ever forget. We went, and there was a dog from a nearby village, it was very famous. It was called the blue dog.
28 Ew kûçikê șîn, yanî di/ di Diyarbekir de, li bölga Diyarbekir deng bû. Wek ne kûçik bû, hesip.
That blue dog, I mean in Diyarbakir area, was well-known. It was not a dog, it was almost like a horse.
29 Em rokê çûn, me carkê nêrt ko wî kûçkê șîn û sê çar ḥeb kûçik ji çem derbasî alê me bûne.
One day, we went, and we saw that blue dog with three to four other dogs had crossed the river to our side.
30 Em jî serê sibê çûn, carekê hevalê min-î ku gundiyê me bû, ew jî diçû ber de, em bi hev re diçûn em di kes bûn.
And we went in the early morning. My friend who was from my village was grazing as well, we used to go together, there was just the two of us.
31 Ê carekê çaʕv li wî kûçikê șîn kir mi go, “lawo tișt nabe nayên me”.
He suddenly saw that blue dog, and I told him: “nothing is going to happen, they won’t attack us.”
32 Go na “em-ê werin, hadê em herin malê.” “Kuro lawo wê dewar têkeve ziyanê xelkê bikin.
He said: “no they are coming, come on let’s go home”. I said: “hey man, the cows will do a lot of damage.
33 Ev der misirr e, pembo ne, și te-r bêjim xelkê avêtine ana têkevin em-ê meḥw bin. Em-ê ji gundiya re bên çi?!”
This area is planted with corn, cotton. People have seeded the land, we will be ruined. What would we say to the villagers!?”
34 Ew ji wî alî serê dewara bû, e-jî li-vî alî bûm. Yaw carekê kûçik go “ʕew”, mi carkê nihêrt vî xopanî çi dûman ji ber nigê wî radibe! Te digo qey ʕereba avê ji bîrê ti davînî ûçê û son surʕet û dûmana wî mi derbas kir.
He was at one end of the herd and I was at the other end. Once the dog barked, that coward fled with a cloud of dust behind, he was more like a water carriage, and he sped past me with all the dust behind.
35 Hey ez gazî dikimê e dibê “wer”, dibê “law wî kûçkî wê me buxwe mala me xera bike”. Ya ev jî anîka me-y ber dewara bû.
The more I shouted saying “come back”, the more he was saying “the dog will eat us, it will kill us”. So, this was our adventure while we were grazing the cows.
36 Rokê jî em dîsa li ber dewara bûn, çem kûr bû, çem dewarê me çûn wî alî avê, me go em-ê herin, em çûn dewara, îja ku em çûn em dewara derbas kin, çem gelekî/ çem berda. E-dibêm hema wê carê ne ji wî darî bûna belkî ana em her du jî li ber çem biçûna.
Another day when we were also grazing the cows, the river was deep, and our cows crossed the river to the other bank. We decided to go, but when we wanted to cross the river back with the cows, the current got stronger and unless there was a tree there, we might have been swept away by the river.
37 E dewar hatin û wî çemî hat, hevalik xwe bi dûva da çêlekekê girt, mi-jî xwe bi wî darî girt û wî darî û wê dûva çêlekê e-dbê {îsa} ḥeyata me xelas kir. Hingî çem gelekî berdan û ja me lêxist wele me dewarê xwe rast kirin û em hatin.
The cows came and the river got stronger, a friend hung on to a cow’s tail and I held the tree tight, and that tree and the cow’s tail saved our lives that day. The river current was so high, but we still managed to cross it back along with our cows.
 38 (…)
 39 Erê wele wisa bû.
Yes, that’s how it was.
40 Zarokatiya te li gund derbas bû ne wisa?
You spent your childhood in the village, didn’t you?
41 Ee, zaroktiya mi-l gund derbas bû, hetanî lîsê, ji lîsê pê ve em gîștin çûn Diyarbekir û jê pê ve (…)
Yes I spent my childhood in the village till high school. From high school onwards, we all went to Diyarbakir and after (…)
42 Nav zeviya de filan we çandinî filan çi dikir?
What did you use to plant?
43 Çandinî, îște me pêșî pembû datanî. Dawiyê xelkê ûçkagitçîlix kir, ser van prîm mirîma, yanî werhasil ewk çêbû.
Planting, first, we used to plant cotton. Later some people committed frauds involving incentives and the like.
44 Yanî ee, û me jî dev ji pembû berda. Ê me saẋlem bû jî, dîsa bi wa-re em șewitîn.
Therefore, we had to abandon our cotton. Although ours was sound, we were still negatively affected by them.
45 Prîma me rokê șewitî, yanî çû meḥkemeliẋê. Çox șukur meḥkeme got hûn saẋlem in.
One day things went wrong, that is there was a case opened against us for it. Thank God the court said “you haven’t done anything wrong.”
46 Dawiyê perê me dan, ama șeș ḥeft sala em li meḥkema ewk bûn, yanî saẋlem derketin.
However, the case stayed in the court for six to seven years. I mean our position was right.
47 Dawiyê dewlet çûn, çûne yargitayê jî, yargitay go “temam e, hûn saẋlem in”.
In the end, the governmental high court confirmed the appeal and said that our position was quite right.
48 Ê me dan, ji pey wê, wê salê pê ve îja me des misirr kir, me misirr nema me pembû danî, piștî me go siqintî yașamîș dibin, em wê siqintiyê yașamîș nakin ḥeta ana bi șerefa xwe em yașamîș bûn, bê siqintî, bê vir de, bê wir de, piștî vê seʕetê me dev ji pembû berda.
From that year on, we started planting corn, after we faced trouble, we didn’t plant cotton any more. We didn’t want to live with problems and so far have been living with honour. After that point we gave up planting cotton.
49 Zarokatiyê, dema em biçûk bûn lîstikên me hebûn.. yanî oyun tișt têne bîra te mesela?
During childhood, when we were children, we played some games. I mean do you remember any examples?
50 Erê, ê-me lîstikê me, wele ême gele pirrê wê dar û qîtik dilîst.
Yes we did have some games, actually we used play catching the stick.
 51 “Dar û qîtik.”
“Dar û qîtik”
 52 E, dar û qîtik.
Yes.
 53 Çawa bû mesela? (…)
How was it played, for example?
54 Yaw, ew dar û qîtik, sê çar ḥeb bûn kî darik çûçik jê-dikirin datanîn ser du kevira. Yek li berê dima, dadkirin jorê kî wî qîtkî zeft kirana ew ewî dadkir.
Catching the stick, three or four kids were playing, a small stick was put on two stones. One guy was watching it, they threw the stick upwards and the one who caught the stick would be the next stick guard or watcher,.
55 Yanî, wisa sureklî dongî, kî qîtik zeft kirana, herkê me dey ḥev dilîstin yekî jî davêt.
So the players were moving all the time, each of us played ten of them and one would be throwing.
56 Ew bû êvarê me meselen bi/ bi ewka, hinga bi demançe memançê laylon maylonik tinebûn, me bi ewka, û me bi ewka çêdikir, me bi/ bi darika mesele me demançe çêdikir.
In the evening, we didn’t have any plastic pistols or anything. We used to make our pistols from the sticks.
57 Ê (…) em dibûn pêc șeș gurûba. Hinek dibûn ewk, hinek mesele dibûn ê diz, ê dinê jî dibûn wek hawê polîs. Ê diz xwe vedișartin, em li wan digeriya mesele.
We used to divide ourselves into five or six groups. Some pretended to be thieves, and others pretended to be the police. The ones who were playing the thieves were hiding and the others were looking for them.
58 Kî kî zeft kirana me dest, deva digo “Qipirdama!” o “Teslîm ol!” Wek ʕedetê polîsa û.
We used to tell the one who was captured: “don’t move” or “you are under arrest” like police normally do.
