Samples

The data in this application is centered around the concept of a Sample. A Sample is a collection of data taken from a single source. There are two main types of source for the samples in the RMS.

Fieldwork based samples provide the best coverage of data for the sample. For this reason samples from a published source are not included by default when browsing or searching the database. To include Publications, click the Incl. Publications 'mode control'.

Layouts

A Layout is a visual presentation of the data. In the 'Browse' section of the RMS, the Layouts group the data into grammatical categories in order to make browsing easier. Some data, where they are relevant to more that one category, will be presented on more than one layout.

A Search is a set of criteria defined by the user that determines which Samples the system presents to the user. Searches can be saved and the results can be plotted on a map to show the geographic distribution of the list of samples.

Data Point

A Data point is a potential for a piece of data that is defined by a series of meta data. It can be conceived as a 'box' that will contain data. If one thinks of the table, each cell of that table is a data point, its existence defined by the values in the row and column headings.

The image shows a table with column and row headings. The combination of one row heading and one column heading, where row and column intersect, defines a potential piece of data (a Data Point). These data points are presented on the data layouts, usually within tables like the one shown in the image.

The actual data itself is presented within the data point, and each data point can have more than one piece of data.
